How the EVAP System and Gas Tank Work
Thread starter nova Start date Oct 13, Is there any issues with removal? I heard you will get gas fumes in the garage from it being removed? Mine was missing when I bought the car. I haven't noticed any gas smell in the garage. If I get close to that area once in awhile I might get a faint smell of gas after the car sits awhile.
Pittguy New Member. Why not relocate it outside of engine bay on frame rail.
ATR and possibly cottons used to sell relocation kit for inside bay area. Staff member. Most people actually keep them all you have to do is move it down to the frame rail where the original air box bolts down to. You can use the tab on the bottom of the canister to mount it down there. Use one of the bolt holes for the intake box along with a bolt.

If your not running an egr, I dont think it actualy does anything, plus the charcoal that is in it from 32 years ago is long outlived any useful purpose.
I think some folks just turn that location into an oil catch can I am certainly no expert on this subject but from what I understand, If you aren't running emissions, then it is pretty much just a waist of space.Skip to content. It works, however since the system is sealed and the gas cap is a one way safety vented cap, it'll puke gasoline back up out the cap when things warm up enough. I'd read other solutions of finding old gas cap which isn't sealed, or drilling a small hole in cap.
I wasn't thrilled with that idea. And then I saw someone post about this vent valve that Fuel Safe sells. Part number TPV8, it's a vent valve designed pretty much just for this. At static pressure it is closed. Under light vacuum it opens, thus letting air in so the fuel pump can work properly. Under positive pressure it's closed until it reaches a point like the gas cap, but the pressure is much lower, only around.
And as a further safety measure which might be overkill, I installed this other vent valve. A rollover protection valve which installed upright is open and allows venting, but has a ball bearing valve that once it's beyond horizontal slides over and closes the valve, thus preventing escape of liquid gasoline should you find yourself upside down.

I sure don't plan on that, I don't have a roll cage, but if it ever did happen, it's one less thing to worry about! Road tested yesterday with no problems and no fuel spillage.

The charcoal canister captures the hydrocarbons that would be released into the atmosphere, allowing clean air to recirc into the intake and be burned in the engine. You are just venting fuel vapor into the atmosphere. That pressure builds up when the fuel starts evaporating. Granted, I deleted my charcoal canister, but I didn't even bother with the valve, because I drive my car every day, and am not really concerned with teh evap emissions.
You did a much better charcoal canister delete than I did, but I figured I'd shed a little more light on how the evap emissions system works.
There is no advantage in driveability or gain any power unless there is something wrong with the system, namely a vacuum leak somewhere. You'll might actually lose a tiny bit of mileage since the canister absorbs fuel fumes, and then releases it back into the intake to be burned instead of floating off into the atmosphere. What it gained me was losing a little weight and simplyfing the engine compartment by eliminating a bunch of vacuum lines.
I liked the idea of the valve I put in because it's still sealed when at rest in the garage so you don't smell fumes in garage. When I took it to events and it sits out in sun and after a couple runs and things heat up, the gas cap would vent making strong fume smell and liquid gasoline dribbling down the side of the car. I didn't get any through my day of test driving. Report after event, works like a charm! No fuel pukeup, no strong gas fumes, engine ran great for once. Heard weird soft honking sound once, I think it was the valve popping off. Hey, it's my blowoff valve! Now I just have to work on my driving, got some pretty fast times, but consistency bad so I placed low since rally-x is cumulative time, not best time. Jump to. The car has an AE86 charcoal canister still and it's hooked up to the fuel tankbut the vacuum line on top doesn't go anywhere.
At idle it releases pressure, and the tiniest amount of fuel vapour, so i want to fix it. I know that with the standard AE setup, the charcoal canister hooks up to the VSV that lives under the plenum - however my setup is missing both the valve AND the wiring for it, so scratch that idea. Am i able to run a line straight from the canister, to either of the vacuum lines pictured arrows below? The second picture shows a vacuum line attached to the fitting, but it is currently blocked off by a screw Are there any disadvantages to running one over the other?
The only other vacuum lines the car really has are for aircon idle-up, and the MAP-sensor line. I'm pretty sure i don't want to tee into either of those? Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated Yours sincerely Seamus.
All Jap conversions seem to have something 'left out'. Look on Mr Accoustics page for where that is. Your second pic is a bit of a worry, that port is normally for your air pressure compensation for your fuel pressure regulator.
You have an aftermarket one fitted, what effect this has I don't know. Oh nice! I noticed the car ran a little on the rich side, so it could be that FPR, i might try and find a stock one and check things out. Cheers Sam. I was going to ask you if it ran rich, the point of that vacuum line is so the fuel pressure is regulated according to the manifold vacuum, this stops the engine sucking more fuel out of the injectors or something like that.
I suggest you try an original regulator and plub it where it's meant to be. This is pretty much opposite to what the factory setup does. Either way it would be cheap and easy to try a stock one. Cheers guys.
How to Remove a Charcoal Canister
I will try to get my hands on a stock BT reg and give it a go. Well i might have to do some more thinking. I have a standard blacktop FPR on the way, but after pulling off the cam covers and having a good look at everything, it seems to have TODA-R 9mm cams, MHG, valvesprings, as well as a big garage-annex sticker across the ecu possibly chipped?

Make sure the vehicle is secure before you crawl underneath it. Crawl underneath the vehicle on the driver's side by the gas tank and locate the charcoal canister. This is just forward of the gas tank and has several plastic fuel-line connections running into it.
Disconnect those lines using the flathead screwdriver. Slide the canister out of the bracket and remove it from the vehicle.
